What's happening?

Fan of Dune, John Wick, Jason Bourne, Kickass, Book of Eli, Mission Impossible, or Hanna? All the knife fighting they demonstrated was from the Filipino Martial Arts systems commonly known as Kali, Arnis and Escrima.

Culture Toronto's martial arts events are characterized by their inclusion of real-deal experts, the creation of a space where nobody is pressured beyond their desire, yet where participants can test their skills in a way where nobody gets hurt (as long as you listen and respect what you're learning) and everybody has fun.

In this event, our exploration of martial arts is taking us to the Philippines, a crossroads of religions, philosophies and fighting arts from around the globe.

Under Spanish Colonialism, practicing the art of kali was forbidden. The Filipinos maintained their understanding of sword and knife work through practicing with sticks under the guise of dancing. All the elements of Filipino Martial Arts (Kali, Escrima, Arnis) stem from stick work. Some styles of Kali still treat the stick as a blade, whereas others have learned to appreciate the stick as a stick.

To guide us in this journey, Culture Toronto has reached out to Oliver “Pintados” Garduce, the founder of the Pintados Kali system, who will teach us a riveting lesson from his knowledge as a practitioner and teacher of Filipino Martial Arts.

Oliver "Pintados" Garduce first learned martial arts from his father, and then several mentors in the Philippines. Eventually, he developed his own method, called the Pintados Filipino Martial Arts. Through his collaborations with martial artists like the Budo Brothers on YouTube, he has spread his system to millions of viewers on YouTube. For example, the 3 videos below together have nearly 5 million views.
