Longclaw interpretation by Jay Joo with Culture Toronto
"Longclaw" was the name Jon gave to his Valeryan steel blade handed down to him from Sir Mormont. During Jon's first real encounter with the whitewalkers, it is this blade forged from Dragon's fire and magic that saves his life. In this replica, handmade by Toronto Jewelry and metalsmith artist Jay Joo, a copper foundation is set for the handle while high density plastic painstakingly carved by hand is used for the blade. Both blade and handle are bound together using fiberglass resin and a metal pin ('mekugi') for extra strength for swinging though this is intended to be a showpiece. The hardest Sculpey baking clay was used to create the spiral ridges around the handle for a superior grip, as well as the wolf head pommel. Real leather was then used to cover the handle, while a fine layer of metal, hand brushed with steel wool, was used to wrap the blade. The wolf head was painted by hand and endowed with real naturally occurring rubies for its eyes, for the night is dark and full of terror. There is only one of these in existence. It belongs to Culture Toronto, in the true north. Who shall have it?
